How Does Screen Printing Work?
Screen Printing works by pressing ink through the open areas of a mesh stencil and onto fabric. Each color normally uses a separate screen, and the printed garment is then cured so the ink develops the required adhesion and wash durability.
The process is widely used for T-shirts, hoodies, uniforms, sportswear, denim, fabric panels, promotional apparel, and fashion products.
Prepare the Artwork
The process begins with production-ready artwork.
Design files should define:
Print dimensions
Color values
Placement
Line thickness
Halftones
Underbase requirements
Garment color
Fabric composition
For a multicolor design, each color is separated into an individual layer. Every layer will normally require its own screen.
Very small text, fine gaps, gradients, and distressed effects must be evaluated before screen preparation. Artwork that looks clear on a computer screen may not reproduce correctly through the selected mesh and ink.
Make the Screen
A screen consists of a frame with tensioned mesh.
The mesh is cleaned and coated with a light-sensitive emulsion. After drying in a controlled environment, the artwork film is positioned against the coated screen.
Exposure to light hardens the uncovered emulsion. The image area protected by the opaque artwork remains washable.
After exposure, the screen is rinsed so the image area opens through the mesh. The remaining hardened emulsion blocks ink from passing through the non-printing areas.
The screen is then inspected for:
Pinholes
Incomplete washout
Damaged edges
Incorrect exposure
Mesh contamination
Image dimensions
Small defects are repaired before the screen reaches the press.
Set Up the Garment and Register the Colors
The shirt is positioned on a platen that keeps the printing area stable.
For one-color work, the screen is aligned with the required chest, back, sleeve, or pocket position.
Multicolor work requires registration. Each screen must place its color in the correct relationship to all other colors.
Poor registration creates:
Color gaps
Unwanted overlaps
Blurred outlines
Uneven borders
Misaligned text
Test prints are completed before bulk production. The operator adjusts screen position, off-contact distance, squeegee pressure, and print order until the approved result is achieved.
Apply the Ink
Ink is placed across the screen.
A flood stroke fills the open mesh with ink. The squeegee then moves across the image under controlled pressure, pushing ink through the stencil and onto the garment.
The result depends on:
Mesh count
Ink viscosity
Squeegee hardness
Blade angle
Printing pressure
Stroke speed
Off-contact distance
Fabric surface
Dark garments often require an underbase so light colors remain visible. The underbase may receive a short flash-drying step before the next colors are applied.
Too much ink can create a heavy hand feel and poor detail. Too little may reduce opacity and color consistency.
Cure the Printed Garment
Printing places the ink on the fabric, but curing develops its final durability.
The curing method depends on the ink system and garment material. Conveyor dryers, heat presses, flash units, or other controlled equipment may be used.
The printed layer must reach the required curing condition without scorching the fabric, causing dye migration, changing garment shape, or making the ink brittle.
A surface that feels dry is not necessarily fully cured.
Production teams may perform stretch checks, wash tests, abrasion checks, color comparisons, and adhesion evaluation according to the order specification.
Why Fabric Type Changes the Process
Cotton, polyester, linen, denim, and blended fabrics absorb and respond to ink differently.
Polyester can release dye under heat, affecting light print colors. Stretch fabrics need an ink system that can move with the garment. Textured materials may require a different mesh, ink deposit, or artwork adjustment.
That is why fabric details should be supplied before sampling.
